FAQ's

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. Why should I choose a goat milk formula over formulas made from cow’s milk or soy?

Goat milk is known as a gentle milk source. It has a number of unique characteristics that make it an excellent basis for child formula.

  • Goat milk is naturally easy to digest (due to a unique fat and protein composition)
  • Goat milk is naturally rich in important nutrients such as Ca and vitamin A, and has a high bio-availability of iron.
  • Goat milk has a deliciously mild taste, that children love.

Kabrita goat milk formulas combine these natural benefits of goat milk with modern-day compositions, that can be compared to the compositions of premium cow milk formulas. This means that with Kabrita your little one gets the best of both worlds.

2. What is the difference between Kabrita and other brands of goat milk formulas?

Kabrita is the only goat milk based formula that has a modern-day composition, which is comparable to the compositions used in premium cow milk formulas.

Kabrita contains additional whey proteins to ensure the correct amount of amino acids in the formula. This also supports the advantage of easily digestible whey protein. The addition of whey proteins is nutritionally recommended by experts in the field and legislated in countries around the world.

Being inspired by mothers’ milk, Kabrita contains an OPO-fatblend (also known as bèta-palmitate). Breast milk is known to contain a high amount of bèta-palmitate and contributes to the typical breast-fed stools and calcium absorption.

Kabrita contains the unsaturated omega-fatty acids DHA and AA (LCPUFA’s), which support the normal eye-sight and brain development of infants. LCPUFA’s are important structural components of the brain and retina.

Kabrita contains prebiotic fibers: GOS / FOS. These fibers have a positive effect on the bacterial composition in the gut by stimulating growth of beneficial bacteria (Bifido- and lactobacilli).

Thanks to this unique combination between a modern-day composition and the natural benefits of easy to digest goat milk, you can feel secure that your little one gets all the nutrients he or she needs in a gentle way.

3. How do you guarantee the quality of Kabrita products?

At Kabrita we perform the entire production process ‘in-house’. This means that we manage the process from the goat milk collection to the filling of the tins all within our own company. At the basis of Kabrita we have about 70 Dutch family-owned goat farmers who deliver their milk exclusively to Kabrita. These farms are operated in strict adherence with the KwaliGeit (Qualigoat) protocol, a Dutch quality assurance program for goat farming, which governs the hygiene on the farms and the care and welfare of our animals.

The goat milk used for Kabrita comes from the Dutch white Saanen goat, which is well known for itshigh quality goat milk.

After we collect the milk from our goat farmers, we transport it to our own factories in the provincesof Overijssel and Friesland. Here we combine over 75 years of infant formula expertise with the latest state of the art production technology. All our factories are frequently audited by internationally approved third parties.

What makes goat milk naturally easy to digest?

Goat milk is naturally easy to digest due to its typical protein and fat composition.

Goat milk protein forms a softer curd in the stomach, due to the relatively low amount of αs1-caseinprotein. This softer curd allows the goat milk protein to pass through the stomach and intestines in a gentle way, which may reduce discomfort.

In addition, goat milk contains a relatively high amount of short- and medium-chain fatty acids. These are easily attacked by the digestive enzymes and subsequently easily absorbed. Furthermore the fat globules in raw goat milk are smaller and therefore also easier to break down.

What other advantages can be attributed to goat milk?

Besides its easy digestibility, goat milk is well known for its high levels of nutrients, its low amount of αs1-casein and bèta-lactoglobulin (which can be involved in allergic reactions) and its pleasant taste. In addition, some people experience less phlegm when using goat milk.

4. Is Kabrita a safe and complete infant formula?

If breast milk, for whatever reason, is no longer an option, it is important to know that Kabrita is a safe and complete alternative for healthy babies.

Like all mammalian milks, raw goat milk has a too high protein content and a shortage of some nutrients that are important for your baby’s development. In Kabrita, like in all other infant formulas, these nutrient levels have been adapted and supplemented to optimal levels to ensure that your baby gets the nutrients that he or she needs. Kabrita complies with local laws and regulations. This means that the composition of Kabrita serves to meet the particular nutritional needs and supports the normal growth and development of a healthy baby

5. Does Kabrita have a ‘goaty’ smell and flavour?

No, mainly due to the freshness of the goat milk we use for our infant formula and our fast production process, Kabrita infant formula has a fresh and mild taste, just like other infant formula. Naturally, it is possible that your baby will need some time to get used to a new formula. Please contact your GP or health visitor when experiencing hiccups when introducing a (new) formula to your baby.

6. Can I use Kabrita in case of a cow’s milk protein allergy?

No. Although the composition of goat milk protein differs from cow’s milk protein, goat milk infant formula is not a suitable alternative in case of a medically confirmed cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA). In case of a cow’s milk protein allergy, it is very likely that there will be also an allergic
reaction to goat milk. This is called a cross reaction. Luckily only 2% to 3% of all babies has a medically confirmed cow’s milk allergy.

The majority of infants can have symptoms that might look like a CMPA, but are mostly related to cow’s milk sensitivity or hiccups that naturally occur in almost every baby’s life. At Kabrita we striveto use the gentleness of goat milk to let your baby grow with ease.

7. Can I use Kabrita in case of a lactose intolerance?

No, Kabrita is not a suitable option in case of a lactose intolerance. Lactose is a milk sugar that naturally occurs in all milks. It provides the required fuel and energy to all cells of the body of your baby. Lactose is also the primary carbohydrate source in breast milk. This is why infant formula regulations demand the addition of lactose to formulas like Kabrita.

Luckily, lactose intolerances are uncommon before the age of 2 to 3 years. Most babies are perfectly able to break down the lactose that occurs in breast milk and infant formula. The presenceof lactose intolerance is shown by symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, gas and bloating. These are all symptoms that could naturally occur or that could also relate to another diagnose. If you have any doubts about the cause of eventual complaints that your baby has, then please contact your GP in order to get a good diagnosis. All Kabrita formulas contain lactose and are therefore not suitable for children with a diagnosed lactose intolerance. If you have any doubts about the cause of eventual complaints that your baby has, then please contact your GP in order to get a good diagnosis.

Can goat milk be a good alternative after a milk free period?

Yes, Goat milk is naturally easy to digest and contains less allergenic protein and is therefore a suitable alternative to start with after a milk free period. In countries like Russia it is the standard procedure to use goat milk after a milk free period.

Please make sure to always consult your physician if you are thinking about using goat milk after a milk free period due to a severe allergy.

8. Why is Kabrita relatively expensive?

There are several reasons why Kabrita is more expensive than other types of formula. The main reason is the cost price of the ingredients we use. The price of a litre of goat milk is more than twice the price of a litre of cow’s milk. In addition, certain other ingredients are more expensive as well. Sometimes because we have made a specific choice to use the highest quality (and therefore more expensive) ingredients, which is for instance the case for our fat blend. In other cases we did simply not have a choice in order to avoid the presence of cow’s milk protein.

Another reason why goat milk formula is relatively expensive is because of the small scale goat milk production compared to the larger cow’s milk industry. This inevitably and unfortunately results in a higher price.

9. My paediatrician is not familiar with Kabrita. How do I best inform him or her?

The use of goat milk as a basis for infant nutrition has been approved and proven safe* since a few years. This is when we started to craft our safe and complete range of Kabrita goat milk formulas.

Kabrita started in 2011, and gradually expanded to become the global number 1 goat milk infant formula to date. Kabrita combines the natural gentleness of goat milk with valuable nutrients such as DHA omega-3 fatty acids and dietary fibres.

*European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)

10. Is Kabrita non-GMO?

The milk that is used for Kabrita does not contain GMOs. Almost no GMO foods can be found in Europe thanks to strict GMO food- and feed and labelling regulations. Additionally, no European infant formula producer makes use of genetically modified ingredients. Because all infant formulas only contain non-GMO ingredients, no further claims can be made for EU infant formulas on this topic.
Next to the high European standards, the KwaliGeit (‘Qualigoat’) program and additional strict standards set by our company, make that we are able to offer the best quality goat milk infant formula. We only use the highest quality ingredients of which we know the origin and the way they are being produced.

11. Do you also have other products than infant formula?

We often receive the question if we also sell Kabrita products that add to the range of our current infant formulas. In South Africa we choose to have a full focus on continuously developing our formula range and therefore not to develop additional products on the short term. Of course the launch of a new or additional Kabrita product will be communicated clearly.

12. Where can I buy Kabrita?

In South Africa you can buy Kabrita online at our webshop, Dis-Chem, Takealot.com and Wellness Warehouse. We also sell in-store at Dis-Chem, Wellness Warehouse, Baby City and Organic Zone. Please see our Stores page for more information.

13. What does Kabrita mean?

Kabrita is distracted from the Spanish word Cabrito, which means ‘little goat’.

14. Is Kabrita infant formula organic?

No, the goat milk we use for Kabrita formulas is not organic. Due to a scarce availability of organic goat milk, it is not possible to produce a worldwide available, fully organic goat milk formula range.

15. What are the differences between Kabrita 1, 2 and 3?

Kabrita goat milk formulas support the nutritional needs of different phases of development and growth of an infant. The main differences between the three formulas is formed by the amount of protein, fat and carbohydrates. Also the fact that a baby will be introduced to solid foods at a certain age, results in a different nutrient composition of the three Kabrita formulas.

Breastfeeding is the best source of nutrition for infants. The nutritional composition of breast milk suits the requirements of essential nutrients in a gentle, natural way. However, if you choose to use Kabrita, the following guidelines apply for the introduction of a new stage to your baby. Note that every baby is unique. Please contact your GP or health visitor if you have any questions regarding the introduction of Kabrita 1, 2 and 3.

Kabrita 1: suitable for babies from 0-6 months
Kabrita 2: suitable for babies from 6-12 months
Kabrita 3: suitable from 12 months

- Kabrita 1 infant formula is suitable for baby’s from 0-6 months and contains the lowest amount of total protein.
- The level of protein is slightly increased in Kabrita 2 follow-on formula and Kabrita 3 Toddler formula.
- The total level of fatty acids is the highest in Kabrita 1 infant formula and decreases in Kabrita 2 and Kabrita 3.
- The amount of carbohydrates is approximately similar for all Kabrita formulas.

Next to the above mentioned macro-nutrients, also the availability of micro-nutrients is required by law. These vary slightly per formula depending on age and specific needs.

Kabrita 1, 2 and 3 all contain added valuable ingredients such as goat whey protein concentrate, a rich fatty acid composition including DHA omega 3 fatty acids and dietary fibres.
